ABOUT US

In 1902, William Wallace, left his home in Crosshouse and headed out towards the coast where he took over a carriage hiring business in the small scenic town of West Kilbride.

Over the next decade, his business, which was at the heart of the community, thrived as he provided his lifeline, horse drawn transport service to the locals of the village, but in 1914, the world went to war and life, as it was, changed forever.

For William, who by this time owned around 14 horses, there was no escaping its path and the army commandeered a number of his beasts for the war effort. Not to be disheartened, William travelled to Ireland, where he purchased a new stock of horses and his business continued to prosper.

It was after peace was declared, in the mid-20s when William purchased his first motor hearse. Horse and carriage was still the main source of transport but the day of the motorcar was born and the family business offered both the motorcar and traditional horse-drawn carriages for weddings, funerals and of course day-to-day travel. William was a very important figure in the community becoming a founder member of the Clyde Coast bus service.

William married Helen Young and they had two sons – one who sadly died aged just 12 – and two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth. William and Helen’s surviving son John began working for the family business when he was just 10 and became the choice driver of many of the regular customers.

The business continued to grow and William kept up with demand increasing his number of motorcars…
